With most courses offered by the Division of Graduate and Professional Studies, students have considerable freedom in completing their coursework. The asynchronous format of faculty-directed independent study allows students to “attend class” anywhere and anytime. For other courses, including courses offered during the Summer Program, students adhere to a more specific schedule. In all courses, students are required to complete course-specific assignments within a specified amount of time, detailed later in the Policies and Procedures section of this catalog.

Even with the flexibility that this program of study affords, students should still be aware of the following important dates, which occur each year.

Saint Joseph’s College of Maine was established in 1915 pursuant to authority granted in the Articles of Incorporation under the laws of the State of Maine and is empowered by the State to grant collegiate honors and degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels of study.

Saint Joseph’s College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools & Colleges Inc., a non-governmental, nationally-recognized organization whose affiliated institutions include elementary schools through collegiate institutions offering postgraduate instruction. Accreditation of an institution by the New England Association indicates that the college meets or exceeds criteria for the assessment of institutional quality periodically applied through a peer group review process. An accredited school or college is one which has available the necessary resources to achieve its stated purposes through appropriate educational programs, is substantially doing so, and gives reasonable evidence that it will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. Institutional integrity is also addressed through accreditation.

Accreditation by the New England Association is not partial but applies to the institution as a whole. As such, it is not a guarantee of the quality of every course or program offered, or the competence of individual graduates. Rather, it provides reasonable assurance about the quality of opportunities available to students who attend the institution. The Department of Nursing is approved by the Maine State Board of Nursing, Augusta, Maine. The undergraduate and graduate nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, One Dupont Circle, NW, Suite 530, Washington, DC 20036-1120. The programs described in this catalog are administered by the Division of Graduate and Professional Studies, with the exception of the Nursing programs. The Master of Science in Nursing, the Nursing Graduate Certificates and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing are administered by the Department of Nursing, with administrative support by the Division. The two administrative structures necessarily require some differences in policies and procedures. These differences are reflected within the catalog.
