Purpose and Program Objectives
The Leadership Master of Business Administration (MBA) prepares students to provide leadership in business organizations, and not to simply provide administrative oversight. Given its leadership focus, this graduate business program prepares students to be both technically competent and interpersonally skillful. The curriculum prepares future business managers to be leaders by deepening their understanding of the interplay of the quantitative (i.e. revenue, profit, costs) and qualitative (meaning, relationships, values) in business organizations. Accordingly, in this program, ethics is as important as economics, psychology as important as finance, communication as important as commerce, and quality as important as quantity.
Graduates of this program will:
- Gain the necessary knowledge and skills to develop productive relationships (individual to individual, individual to organization, organization to society) and to positively and productively influence others;
- Be technically competent and interpersonally skillful;
- Develop an understanding of the influence of culture on both individual and organizational performance;
- Influence, collaborate and provide creative solutions for organizations;
- Be leaders of people and managers of organizational systems.

Curriculum
This Leadership MBA program reflects the fact that the conduct of business is an interpersonal endeavor; business happens between people. Good leadership is not just about overseeing the many aspects and transactions in business, it is also about understanding the interpersonal nature of business and the complexity of organizations. Specifically, leadership has to do with the qualitative (e.g. the personal & interpersonal, ethics, quality and change), as well as the quantitative and measurable (e.g. profit, costs, and market share).
Candidates must satisfactorily complete 42 graduate credits, with an overall GPA of Saint Joseph’s College courses of 3.0 or higher. This consists of four reciprocally interdependent groups of courses. Internet access is required for all courses. Courses are offered in five terms per year and are 10-weeks in length and devised in a “cyber class” format. This allows opportunity for students to engage and participate in a fashion much like they would in a traditional class but without the requirement of everyone being online on the same day or at the same time.
Quality Leadership Specialization Courses
(18 semester-hour credits) Additional Admission Requirements
MBA applicants must submit a 750-word introspective essay that reflects a synthesis of a critical introspective analysis of one’s self. This introspective essay must not be a biographical accounting of the applicant’s accomplishments, skills, and experiences, but rather an in depth self-analysis of the person who he/she is. [Introspection requires observation or examination of one’s own mental and emotional state, mental processes, etc.; the act of looking within oneself - soul-searching, a characterization of the self.] Based on a critical introspective self analysis, applicants must address how who he/she is and wishes to become aligns with and will be enabled by specific aspects of this graduate leadership program - that is, what it is about the Leadership MBA that aligns with who the applicant is and who the applicant is seeking to become. Thus the content of the essay is the result of a critical inward looking self-analysis it is not to be an explanation of what one thinks leadership is, nor is it a reporting of the things one has done or the positions one has held or wishes to hold. The applicant must demonstrate that he/she is able to speak directly to the required issue, as this is a required ability for success throughout the program. As support and documentation, students must also submit their resume with this essay. Prerequisites
Matriculants in the Leadership MBA program must hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited academic institution, with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Students are also required to have at least two years of full-time business experience. |
