The major in Literature and American Culture is designed for students interested in studying literature within the context of American culture and twenty-first-century issues. Such students prefer, rather than a traditional English major, a literature-focused but interdisciplinary perspective on the society within which they live. As with the English major, Literature and American Culture helps students develop their ability to read critically, write effectively, and engage in substantive research. However, Literature and American Culture is more rooted in contemporary social, political, and aesthetic issues than the English major.
The major in Literature and American Culture provides students with in-depth experience and expertise in several important areas:
1. Understanding and analyzing literature.
2. Assessing the variety and complexity of American culture.
3. Exploring ways in which literature reflects and affects American culture.
4. Writing clearly and perceptively about literature and culture.
